These birds are named for the male's reddish chest patch and their large beak size. A female rose breasted grosbeak, right, is less attractive, like females of most bird species.

Their beaks easily break open tough seed pods.

The birds spend most of their time in wooded areas of the Upper Midwest and Canada.

There are at least seven species of grosbeaks, including black-headed, yellow and blue.

These photos were taken in our backyard except for the female, which was photographed in a county park, and the bottom photo, which was taken at a nearby nature area.
