Three 2009 calendars accepted John's photos. The Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin  used the above photo to represent July. The calendar cover is to the left (not our photo). The bluebird above is landing on a nesting box at Bong State Recreation Area in Brighton, WI, with food in his beak for chicks inside the box.

The same photo was used by the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks on its April page along with a second photo from John, left, of a barn swallow bringing an insect to its chick, also at Bong. The cover for that calendar is below (not John's).
Another calendar produced by the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin  centers around birds that nest in tree cavities or, more likely these days, in boxes set up by people. The cavity nester calendar includes 3 of John's photos, below. That calendar's cover is to the left.
The month of January for the cavity nester calendar features a red-breasted nuthatch that  landed on son Sam's hand to grab a free seed snack from his palm.  We were in Duluth, Minn., near Hawk Ridge, at the time.
A tree swallow, above right photo, isn't pleased that another swallow is landing on his nest box. John took this photo  in northern Indiana.

This black-capped chickadee, right, was at a suet feeder just outside a window at our Kenosha home. This is the same bird, but not the same photo, included on National Geographic's Your Shot website in April 2007.

This photo of a crow dipping its beak into the water off the Racine, Wis. lakefront won an honorable mention in the Wis. Dept. of Natural Resources Great Lakes calendar contest for 2010.
